01 · WHAT IT DOES

It lines the whole drum, not just the base

The difference from a bottom strainer is the whole height: covering the walls too, the honey drains through more surface and far more cappings fit before you have to empty. Over an uncapping day that is several interruptions fewer.

The rod handles let you lift it out full without tipping the drum or looking for tools. Underneath is the honey, clear of lumps and ready for the next step.

02 · WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

Eight millimetres is not a filter

The perforation is 8 mm: it holds cappings, lumps of wax and whatever drops off the frame. Anything finer than that — suspended wax, bubbles, bits of wing — goes through with the honey.

So what leaves the drum still needs time in a settling tank. Saying the honey comes out «free of wax particles» is overstating it: it comes out free of cappings, which is not the same.

03 · THE MATERIAL

Galvanised steel, not stainless

It is 1 mm galvanised steel sheet with rod legs and handles. It holds up well and costs what stainless cannot, but the coating is the only thing between the steel and the honey.

In practice: wash it and dry it when you finish, do not leave honey standing on it overnight, and check the galvanising now and then. Honey is acidic and a bare spot will rust.

04 · WHERE IT FITS

Between the bucket and the uncapping bench

It is the middle step: more comfortable and with more capacity than uncapping over a bucket, and a good deal cheaper than building a bench with its tray and tap.

And the cappings left on top still hold honey. Drained they lose most of it, but squeezing the rest needs a press; and then the wax goes to the melter.
