The Hambly Queen Dial is a circular plastic calculator for the queen-rearing beekeeper. It marks day by day the phases of the rearing cycle (egg → larva → capping → emergence → mating flight → laying) and tells you exactly when to do each operation: graft, move cells to nucs, check laying, remove protectors. The tool that avoids the most expensive timing error in queen rearing — missing the key day by relying on memory.

📅 The queen-rearing cycle has strict windows

In queen rearing, being late on an operation costs the whole investment: day 1 egg laid, day 4-5 larva suitable for grafting (after 24 h it is too old), day 8 cell capped (do not touch it or you damage it), day 14 mature cell — take it out before day 16 unless you want it to emerge inside the bank, day 16 virgin queen emerges, day 21-23 first mating flight (depending on climate), day 28-35 laying starts. Each milestone has a 24-48 h window — outside the window, operational error.

🔧 How the dial works

The Hambly Queen Dial is a double plastic disc: on the outer disc you mark the grafting date (or the egg date if you know it), and turning it shows you automatically all the following cycle dates: when capping happens, when to take the mature cell out of the bank, when to introduce into the nuc, when to check emergence, when to expect the first laying. Without having to calculate in your head or look at tables. For breeders with several simultaneous series (5 batches per year, each with 30 queens), the dial avoids the mistake of crossing dates between series.
