Beeswax melting and sterilization unit. 200-liter capacity, temperature adjustable from 50°C to 180°C. Made of acid-resistant stainless steel.
The 200-liter wax sterilizer is designed to melt and sterilize beeswax through controlled heating, ensuring the elimination of disease spores such as American foulbrood (Paenibacillus larvae) and other heat-resistant bacteria. Entirely built from acid-resistant stainless steel, it is the safest and most durable option for treating wax intended for reuse in beekeeping.
What problem does it solve in beekeeping?
Recycled beeswax can act as a vector for transmitting serious diseases if not properly sterilized. Unlike conventional melting (75–100 °C), which only liquefies and decants the wax, sterilization requires reaching temperatures above 120–125 °C and maintaining them for a sufficient time to eliminate resistant spores. This equipment allows you to achieve those temperatures accurately and safely, making it an essential tool for preventing the spread of pathogens like American foulbrood.
How does the sterilizer work?
It features a double-walled thermal insulation chamber filled with thermal oil (not included), with a recommended capacity of around 90 liters to avoid overflow through the safety valve, as the oil can expand by 7–10% when reaching 100 °C. This system ensures even heat distribution and prevents localized overheating of the wax. Wax is melted by a high-power 6000 W electric heater, and the temperature is manually regulated via a potentiometer, adjustable from 50 °C to 180 °C.
To facilitate cleaning and emptying, the equipment is fitted with multiple ball valves:
• Water drain (bottom): 2” valve
• Wax drain (side): 3/4” valve
• Auxiliary valves: for internal drainage or cleaning
It also includes a top lid with closure to help retain heat during the sterilization process.
Recommended practices for wax sterilization
• To eliminate American foulbrood spores: maintain wax at 120 °C for 20 minutes, or 110 °C for 3–4 hours.
• Use only stainless steel surfaces in contact with the wax to prevent contamination.
• Not all wax needs to be sterilized: new cappings or clean, traceable combs may only require conventional melting.
• Sterilization is highly recommended when handling wax of uncertain origin, when contamination is suspected, or in countries where legislation requires it for commercialization or import.
Practical advantages
• High capacity: 200 liters
• Heating system: double-walled with thermal oil
• Temperature control: manual potentiometer (50–180 °C)
• Power: 6000 W
• Power supply: 3 x 400 V (three-phase)
• Tank diameter: Ø705 mm
• Effective drainage: separate valves for water and wax
• Robust build: food-grade stainless steel, corrosion-resistant
Important: This equipment does not replace initial wax quality control. It is essential to select combs free of chemical residues and serious diseases before subjecting them to thermal processing.
