01 · WHY OIL AND NOT WATER

Water has a ceiling at 100 °C; oil does not

A water circuit cannot go past 100 °C without pressure, it boils, it has to be topped up and it eventually corrodes the inside of the equipment. Oil spreads the heat without pressure and without boiling off, and it does not attack the circuit it runs through.

For what a honey house actually does — wax at 62-65 °C, honey at 30-40 — the oil works far below its limit, and that is exactly why it lasts: nothing is asked of it that would degrade it.

02 · THE RANGE

-30 to +310 °C, and the floor is what matters

The 310 °C ceiling is rarely approached in beekeeping. What is welcome is the other end: with a -30 °C lower limit, the circuit starts without trouble in a shed at zero degrees in January, which is when wax gets melted.

Its low viscosity is what lets it circulate cold and transfer heat evenly, with no hot spots and no residue building on the circuit walls.

03 · IT NEVER TOUCHES THE HONEY

A circuit fluid, not a food oil

The oil runs through the tank's jacket and never meets the wax or the honey. That separation is what has to be respected: if the jacket leaks, stop the machine, clean it and bottle nothing from that vessel until you are sure no oil got in.

It is a technical product and is handled as one, with gloves and never poured hot.

04 · MAINTENANCE AND END OF LIFE

Watch the colour, and used oil does not go down the drain

Heat transfer oil oxidises with heating cycles. The sign that it is time to change it is that it darkens and smells different: do not wait for the machine to heat worse.

And what comes out is hazardous waste. It goes to an authorised handler, like engine oil, never down the drain or into ordinary rubbish.

You buy it for the circuit you have to fill, so the first thing to check is your equipment's capacity.
