Gas wax boiler 1.15 metres square: a hundred Dadant frames per batch, an LPG burner with thermocouple and separate outlets for the wax and for the water.
The water is not an accessory to the process: it is what stops the flame from cooking the wax. Here the fire is under the tank, not under the wax. The water gets in between, stays at 100 °C and that is where the temperature stops; the molten wax floats above it and the dirt stays below. That is why there are two valves for the wax and one, lower down, for the water.
01 · A HUNDRED FRAMES PER BATCH
The inner perforated basket is 990 × 990 × 430 mm, close to half a cubic metre. It takes up to 100 Dadant US or Blatt frames, around 125-130 Langstroth or around 95-100 Layens, depending on how they are stacked. The frames go in whole: nothing has to be dismantled.
The outer tank is 1154 × 1154 mm and 830 mm high. That is worth looking at before the capacity, because it is a piece of furniture over a metre on each side and you have to decide where it lives.
02 · SEPARATION BY DENSITY
Molten wax floats on the water and the dirt sinks with it. The two Ø 40 mm wax valves draw the clean layer off the top; the Ø 25 mm water valve empties the dirty water and its residue from the bottom.
That is the whole logic of the machine, and it explains why the water is changed between batches: once it is saturated with cocoons and propolis it stops doing its settling job.
03 · THE BURNER AND ITS TWO SAFEGUARDS
The LPG burner is built in, with piezo ignition, so no flame has to be brought near it, and a safety thermocouple, which is the part that cuts the gas if the flame goes out. On a machine that runs for hours with a cylinder beside it, that is the detail that matters.
The unit does not include the pressure regulator for the cylinder. You have to fit the one that matches the type of cylinder you use, and it is mandatory.
04 · IT MELTS AND CLEANS
A steam or water boiler melts wax and holds the impurities back in the basket. A steriliser controls time and temperature to reduce microbiological risk, and that is a different machine. This one does not remove acaricides or chemical residues either.
And the wax that comes out still needs settling: a long rest, better while hot and around 80 °C, so the fine dirt sinks and the usable block is left on top. The whole unit is stainless steel, which is what stops iron or brass from darkening the wax as it melts.
