01 · HOW IT WORKS

Steam through a hose, wax out of the drain

The generator boils the water in its tank and sends the steam through a flexible hose to the box. Inside, the heat works between the frames, the wax comes away and leaves through a bottom drain hole into whatever container or mould you put underneath — not included.

Since steam does not go past the temperature of boiling water, the wax does not burn or lose colour. And unlike a solar melter, it works all year and at any hour.

02 · WHAT USERS REPORT

The outlet can clog

It is the point our customers raise most, and it is worth having in front of you: the wax and the debris leave together through the same drain, and the hole can block with cappings, pollen and the dirt of old frames.

What those who own it do is improvise a grid that holds the slumgum above and lets only the wax down. There is no factory insert listed for this model, so plan for it from the first cycle.

03 · WHEN HOT

The plastic gives a little

The body is insulating technical plastic — light, good at holding the heat and easy to clean — but it expands a little when hot. One user warned us that with the box loaded the frames can drop towards the bottom halfway through.

It is easily avoided: do not force the load, seat the frames properly and do not fill to the brim.

04 · WHAT IT LEAVES AND WHAT IT DOES NOT

It cleans the frame, it does not sterilise it

At the end the frame comes out bare and clean of wax and propolis, ready to wire and wax, and the box holds the dry remains, taken out cold.

That said: this is cleaning, not sterilisation. Steam at the temperature of boiling water does not guarantee the destruction of spores. Where a notifiable disease is suspected in your apiary, what happens to the equipment is decided by the official veterinary service, not by the melter.
