01 · 190 GRAMS, ABOUT 5 CANDLES A KILO

And a thick wick, size 5 or 8

Each piece takes about 190 g of wax, so a kilo gives five candles. It is a substantial candle, the sort sold as a single piece and not by the dozen.

The maker specifies thick wicks, size 5 or 8, precisely because of the diameter. On a wide candle the wick is not chosen by taste: it is chosen so the pool of molten wax reaches the edge, and that is what makes it burn all the way down.

02 · 70-75 °C, NOT 60

At 60 beeswax has only just melted

The maker's sheet asked for a pour at about 60 °C. Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C, so at 60 there is nothing to pour, and just above it arrives thick, with no strength to reach into the flutes.

The comfortable point is 70-75 °C, always below the 85 above which wax darkens. Pour slowly so as not to trap air among the ribs, with the wick already tensioned and held by a stick across the top.

03 · UNMOULDING AND FINISHING

Bands off, mould open, candle whole

The mould is closed with elastic bands while it sets. When the piece is completely cold, take the bands off, open the mould and the candle comes out on its own: there is no need to pull it.

Afterwards, trim the wick to about a centimetre and true the base so it stands flat. If you are working fine relief, silicone spray inside before pouring saves grief.
