01 · 317 GRAMS: THREE CANDLES PER KILO

The sum that decides whether it pays

The figure comes out at 12.2 cm tall by 6.4 cm across, and at that size the cylinder asks for 317 grams. That is ten times what a small figurine takes, so the decision is not only aesthetic: it is how much wax you tie up in each piece.

In return, it is the one that sells itself at a market. The engraving — the braided rope, the heart, the little owl and the raised lettering — transfers cleanly even in pure beeswax, which is the worst at copying fine detail because of its high melting point.

02 · POUR THE WAX AT 70-75 °C

Not at 60, where it arrives thick

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C. Pouring it at 60 means pouring it below its own melting point: it arrives pasty, does not reach into the relief and leaves the engraving rounded off. The comfortable range is 70-75 °C, always below the 85 at which wax darkens.

Before filling, a thin coat of silicone spray inside. Pour in a fine stream against the wall, not into the centre, so the air escapes instead of being trapped in the rope and the lettering.

03 · A 3 × 18 WICK FOR 6.4 CM

On a thick candle, the wick is everything

The maker specifies 3 × 18, a thick-candle wick. At 6.4 cm across, an undersized wick sinks a well down the middle and leaves the whole wall unburnt: the candle goes out with two thirds of the wax still in it.

Centre the wick and keep it taut with a stick resting on the rim before you pour. Over 12.2 cm of height, if it goes crooked during filling there is no straightening it afterwards.
