Details of Elastic bands for silicone candle moulds

The first number is the band's unstretched diameter; the second, its width. And the width is what decides whether the candle comes out marked.

Rubber bands for holding split silicone moulds closed while pouring wax. In three sizes, sold in packs.

01 · HOW THEY GO ON

Every two or three centimetres

The mould is closed by running bands around it at intervals of 2 to 3 cm. Fewer than that and the wax finds the seam; more than needed gains you nothing.

The pressure has to be firm but not excessive. A band that is too tight or too narrow presses the silicone inwards, and that mark is copied onto the candle: you get a groove where there should be nothing.

02 · WHICH SIZE TO CHOOSE

By the size of the mould

The wider the band, the more it spreads the force and the less it marks. That is why big or heavy moulds ask for the 6 and 9 mm ones, and the 3 mm are kept for standard figures and medium moulds.

03 · WHY RUBBER

And not an office band

The rubber in these bands has good elastic recovery: it survives pour after pour without going slack, which is what happens to an ordinary band after two uses.

And it withstands contact with hot wax and the cleaning of the mould without degrading. With candles at 65-70 °C that is a condition, not a luxury.
