Details of Candle mould - Angel

Silicone mould of the angel: a candle 10 cm tall and 7.2 across from about 75 grams of wax.

Thirteen candles to the kilo, and a large wick. At 75 grams a piece, a kilo of wax gives thirteen angels. And at 7.2 cm across at the base, the wick it asks for is a 3 × 10: this is not a narrow figure.

01 · 75 GRAMS, 13 CANDLES A KILO

And the wick is chosen by the diameter

The mould is 11 cm tall and 8.5 across — 26.5 in circumference — and the candle comes out at 10 cm by 7.2. That difference is the filling margin.

On a figure of that width, the 3 × 10 wick is the one that gets the pool of wax out to the wall. A thinner one opens a central well and leaves the angel standing on the outside and hollow inside.

02 · POUR AT 70-75, NOT AT 65

At 65 the wax has only just melted

Beeswax melts between 62 and 65 °C. Pouring right at 65 means pouring wax that has only just liquefied, thick, and it reaches the folds of the robe and the wings only halfway. The comfortable point is 70-75 °C.

The upper limit is 85 °C, above which wax darkens. Pour slowly, with the wick centred and held, and do not touch the mould until the piece is completely cold. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.
