01 · HOW MUCH WAX FITS

A good four litres, four kilos

The dimensions give a little over four litres of volume, and since wax weighs almost the same as water, a mould filled to the brim is about four kilos of block.

It is the format in which wax is stored and moved: keeping the year's crop, selling it, or taking it in exchange for foundation sheets.

02 · HOW TO POUR

Let it come down a little first

It is plastic, not steel: better not to pour wax straight off the heat. Letting it drop to 65-70 °C — where it is more than fluid enough — spares the mould and the block comes out just the same.

If you are casting several in a row, let the mould cool between them.

03 · RELEASING THE BLOCK

Wax shrinks on its own

As it cools, wax contracts and pulls away from the walls: that is why a plastic mould needs no release agent. Wait until it is completely cold and the block drops out when you turn it over.

A while somewhere cool speeds the contraction. What you must not do is force it while warm: that is when the block cracks and the mould deforms.

It is the mould, nothing more:
