The simplest feeder for giving syrup without opening the hive: screw on a bottle and slot the channel into the entrance.
Plastic, with a standard thread. For a one-off top-up to a nucleus or a hive, not for large volumes.
01 · HOW IT GOES ON
The simplest, cheapest way to give syrup without opening the hive: screw a standard screw-top bottle of syrup onto it, slot the tongue into the entrance and the bees drink from inside. Plastic, minimal cost and handling —for a one-off boost to a nuc or a colony.
Fill a standard screw-top bottle (neck ~3 cm) with syrup, screw it upside down into the cup and slide the channel into the entrance. Two things so it doesn't spill: a bottle with a compatible thread and setting it perfectly level on a flat base —if the stand is tilted or the floor isn't smooth, syrup runs out the sides—. Get those right and you feed without opening the hive.
02 · BEFORE YOU BUY
It's the cheapest option for a one-off feed to a nuc or colony, without lifting the lid. As it's open feeding at the entrance, it works best in small amounts at dusk, and keep an eye on robbing. For large volumes, wintering or an uneven stand, a frame or top feeder performs better and won't leak.
| ✓ FITS | A one-off top-up to a nucleus, without uncovering and with what you have around. |
| ⚠ IT NEEDS A LEVEL BASE | If the stand is tilted or the ground uneven, the syrup runs out at the sides. |
