Pine Layens queen-rearing frame designed to organise a batch of queen cells inside the hive.
It incorporates three smooth bars, removable and able to rotate through 360°, compatible with NICOT and JZBZ fittings, as well as a feeder at the top. The frame provides order and access; acceptance depends on young larvae, plentiful nurse bees, feeding and timing.
01 · HANDLING
Each bar can be rotated to present the queen cups in a convenient position and removed when you need to fit cup holders, inspect queen cells or move a bar. Prepare all three bars outside the hive and check that they fit back without play. As they are supplied plain, the number and spacing of cups depend on the holders you install. Do not force rotation once queen cells are advanced: move the bar slowly and support it by the wood to avoid jolts.
02 · USE
It can be left in the finishing colony for one or two days before grafting so that it takes on the colony scent. Work with very young larvae, good light and humidity; cover the bar while it is outside and return it promptly to the starter or finisher. Record the date: a well-made bar cannot compensate for late grafting or a colony short of nurse bees.
03 · FEEDING
The upper compartment allows energy feed to be placed close to the rearing colony when forage is insufficient. Fill without spilling and monitor consumption; syrup supplies energy but does not replace enough pollen or protein for the nurse bees. Avoid feeding with honey supers on if the feed could be stored in the honey.
