Details of GPS SMARTBEE beehive anti-theft locator (Layens Frame)

It carries no SIM. It runs on the Sigfox network, so the first thing to check is not the device: it is whether your sites have coverage.

Complete Layens frame with a GPS tracker built into and hidden in the top bar, no monthly fees and three years of connection included. The battery lasts around two years.

01 · THE NETWORK

Sigfox, not mobile telephony

The device sends its coordinates over Sigfox, a low-power network deployed in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and other European countries. There is no SIM card, no operator and no roaming.

Hence the one serious check before buying: look up the Sigfox coverage of your apiary sites. Where there is coverage it simply works; where there is none, no setting will fix it.

02 · WHERE IT HIDES

Inside the top bar of a Layens frame

It is not a box screwed to the floor: the chip is built into the top bar of a complete Layens frame, which goes in among the others and does not stand out. A thief who opens the hive sees frames.

And it stands the frame's normal working life, including going through the extractor. Mind the format: it is a Layens frame, not for Langstroth or Dadant.

03 · BATTERY AND CONTROL

Two years, and an Android-only app

The battery lasts around two years counting five migrations a year, and when it runs out it is replaced — the device stays. The price includes three years of location and connection, with no fees and no maintenance charges.

Tracking is done from the web panel and from the mobile app, which is Android only. If you work with an iPhone, you have the web panel.

04 · WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A TRACKER

It helps recovery, it does not prevent theft

It is worth saying plainly: a tracker will not stop anyone taking the hive. What it does is tell you where it went afterwards, and that is what turns a theft into a recovery.

If it happens, the order is the usual one: report it and let the police act on the coordinates. Going yourself to a place where stolen equipment is sitting is not a good idea. The device is also valid for the Spanish national beekeeping-plan subsidy.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
