The European version of the W5 uses a 5 mm aluminium profile throughout — no exposed plastics, no UV degradation, no components that fail after a few hard winters. The electronics sit inside a precision 3D-printed enclosure fitted flush to the metal frame, with no gaps and no moisture entry points. At 53 × 60 × 430 mm, it sits low and discreet beneath any hive — National, Commercial, Langstroth or Dadant — and needs no additional weatherproofing. This is not a scale you replace every few seasons.

⚖️ 200 kg temperature-compensated load cell — 5-gram resolution

As a half-hive scale, the 200 kg load cell supports up to 400 kg total hive weight — more than enough for a heavily stocked double-super Dadant in full lime flow. Temperature compensation matters here: without it, the swing between a cold early morning and a hot July afternoon generates false drift in the readings. With it, what you see is actual honey weight moving, not thermal expansion of the frame. The 5-gram resolution lets you watch nectar coming in hour by hour during an active flow — something you simply cannot do with a 50 or 100-gram scale.

Powered by standard AA batteries with a real-world autonomy of over five years — you'll change them less often than the ones in your TV remote. No solar management, no charging, no surprises. The device logs one reading per hour continuously and stores over a year of data internally. Sync via Bluetooth: open the BroodMinder Bees app when you visit the apiary and download the full history in seconds. For remote continuous monitoring, adding a BroodMinder Hub automates cloud uploads via 4G — with a Premium plan (€50/year for up to 5 hives) you get a live weight curve from home and configurable alerts.

🔧 Solo installation — with one detail you cannot skip

The half-hive format means one person can install or move it without lifting the full hive: tilt one end slightly, slide the scale underneath, done. But there is one non-negotiable step: the opposite end needs a 60 mm wooden batten (or equivalent angle iron) to keep the hive level and the load cell reading correctly. Without it, the hive tilts and the data is off. It takes thirty seconds, but it is not optional. This is why the W5 suits static apiaries where you control each hive's support — it is not the right tool for migratory beekeeping where re-levelling on every move becomes impractical.

📊 The ecosystem that turns weight data into decisions

Weight alone is already useful.
