BroodMinder-W5 half-hive scale: an aluminium bar that slides under one end of the hive and records the weight every hour with 5 g resolution. A 200 kg temperature-compensated load cell which, in half-hive mounting, covers hives up to 400 kg. AA batteries with more than five years of life according to BroodMinder, over a year of history in memory and download over Bluetooth.
The weight curve tells almost everything, the start of the flow, winter consumption or a swarm, and it is read without opening the hive.
01 · THE 5 GRAMS
What that resolution shows and 100 g does not
With one reading an hour and 5 g of resolution you see the colony’s daily pulse: the weight drops at dawn as the foragers leave and rises at dusk when they come back loaded. During a flow you follow the nectar coming in almost gram by gram, and a stop shows up the same day, not the following week. The cell is temperature-compensated, so the cold of dawn and the heat of midday do not falsify the reading: what goes up is honey, not expanding metal.
02 · THE INSTALLATION
Half hive, and the batten at the other end is not optional
Being a half-hive scale, one person installs it: lift one end slightly, slide the bar underneath and that is it, without dismantling anything. What you cannot skip is the support at the opposite end: it needs a 60 mm wooden batten, or an equivalent angle profile, so the hive stays level and the weight distribution is the one the scale expects. Without it the reading drifts. It is for fixed apiaries: it is not a transport scale.
03 · THE DATA
Bluetooth on a visit, or mobile network with the hub
It holds over a year of readings in memory and downloads with the BroodMinder Bees app over Bluetooth when you visit the apiary, with no connectivity fees. To see the curve from home in real time and get alerts there is the hub with a weather station (2393), which uploads over the mobile network. And if you add a brood sensor, temperature (2390) or temperature and humidity (2399), the app cross-references both: a flat spell in the curve is explained either as no flow or as a problem inside the hive. The range also has the aluminium W4 (2394) and the wooden W (2392).
