Temperature sensor that rests on the top bars of the brood frames and logs up to 24 readings a day to ±0.25 °C, so you know how the colony is doing without opening it.
A colony with brood holds the nest at 34-35 °C whatever the weather does. That steadiness is the signal: while the line stays flat there are bees looking after brood; when it stops being flat, something has happened.
01 · WHAT YOU READ
The flat line is worth more than the number
Nurse bees regulate the nest within a narrow band, around 34-35 °C, and hold it with 5 °C outside or with 35. What tells you something is not a single reading but the shape of the curve.
The clearest case is the worst one: if the inside temperature matches the outside and follows the same pattern, there is no thermoregulation left. The same criterion shows the winter break in laying and the moment the nest starts up again in spring.
What the sensor does not do is diagnose. A sharp break in a flat curve tells you it is time to go and look; what has happened, you decide by opening.
02 · HOW FAR IT REACHES
Bluetooth: ten metres, not your sofa at home
Worth saying first, because it is what disappoints most: the BroodMinder-T talks over Bluetooth Low Energy, with about 10 metres of range. The data is downloaded with your phone while you are at the apiary.
What it saves you is not the trip: it is opening the hive and chilling the nest to find out something the sensor had already written down. For data from home you need a hub with its own connection, such as the BroodMinder-Cell, which picks up what the sensors at the site broadcast.
Internal memory holds up to 7,000 records, so it will run for months before anyone has to come and empty it.
03 · TEMPERATURE ONLY
What this one measures and what the others do
This model measures temperature and nothing else. It is the entry sensor of the range and the cheapest one to spread across several hives, which is where it starts to be useful: comparing hives tells you more than watching one.

The battery is an ordinary CR2032 and lasts about a year; the BroodMinder Bees app updates the firmware and uploads the data to Mybroodminder.com.
04 · WHERE IT GOES
In the middle of the nest, on the top bars
It rests on the top bars of the brood frames, in the middle of the nest and under the inner cover: that is where the heat the bees generate reads cleanly. At the edge of a super it measures the weather more than what happens inside.
It is 26.5 × 4 × 0.8 cm and weighs about ten grams: nothing about the hive has to change.
