Details of Monitoring Kit K2 PRO: BroodMinder Aluminium Scale + 2 BroodMinder Brood Sensors + Cell Hub

BroodMinder kit with the W4 aluminium scale, two brood sensors and a hub with mobile connection. The data reaches your phone without going to the apiary.

The difference from the basic kit is not the sensors: it is the hub. One tells you what happened when you get there; this one tells you now, and that is why it carries a subscription.

01 · WHAT ACTUALLY DECIDES

Do you need to know today, or when you visit?

Both kits measure the same. The difference is when you find out: the basic one stores the data and you download it over Bluetooth on arrival; this one sends it by itself over the mobile network while you are at home.

If you visit weekly anyway, Bluetooth does the job. If the apiary is two hours away, the hub pays for itself on the first trip it saves — and that is the sum to do before looking at anything else.

02 · THE SUBSCRIPTION IS NOT OPTIONAL

The hub runs on the Premium plan

The hub needs no SIM card because connectivity is included in the BroodMinder Premium plan, which is paid and costs more or less depending on how many hives you monitor.

Read it this way: the scale and the sensors are bought once; live access to the data is an annual subscription. Without it the hardware still works over Bluetooth, but the reason for paying for a hub disappears.

03 · NO COVERAGE, NO DATA

The point that sinks the purchase

The hub transmits over the mobile network. In an apiary with no coverage there is no live data, however good the scale — and many of the apiaries that would most benefit from not being visited are exactly where there is no signal.

Before deciding, the one-minute check is to look at your phone at the exact spot where the hives would stand, not on the track or in the village.

04 · WHAT EACH PIECE MEASURES

Scale, sensors and the hub itself

The W4 aluminium scale weighs hourly, takes up to 400 kg and weighs 2.5 kg itself: it is built for migratory work, goes under your arm or under the truck seat and palletises without trouble.

The two brood sensors read the temperature inside the nest. And the hub adds a weather station — temperature, humidity and pressure — which is what gives a weight curve its context: a drop in the rain does not mean the same as a drop in the sun.

05 · WHAT THE SENSOR CANNOT SEE

It measures temperature, not queens

A brood nest holds around 34.5 °C because the bees thermoregulate it. When that stability is lost, something has changed: it may be queenlessness, it may be a break in laying, it may be that the colony has shrunk.

The sensor tells you that something happened and when, not what. You still have to open up to find out — what changes is that you open knowing where to look, and you leave the ones doing fine alone.

06 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Budget for the subscription and check the mobile coverage at the apiary. Without those two, the basic kit does the same for less.

✓ RIGHT FITDistant or migratory apiaries with coverage, where saved trips are worth the subscription.
✕ WRONG FITAn apiary with no mobile coverage, or one you already visit weekly.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDThe Premium subscription is separate and priced by number of hives.
