Aluminium full-hive scale for migratory beekeeping: two bars with four load cells taking up to 400 kg. Slide it under the hive and leave it in place year-round, even during transport, with no levelling and on a wooden or metal pallet. Track the nectar flow, the stores and swarming from your phone over Bluetooth.
A hive's weight curve tells you what is going on inside without you ever opening it up: when the nectar flow kicks off, how much is coming in, whether the colony is drawing down its stores over winter, or whether it has swarmed. For the migratory beekeeper the problem is always distance — you cannot get round every site every week. The BroodMinder-W4 is a full-hive scale, built from two aluminium bars, that you slide under the hive once and leave in place year-round, even during transport. It logs the weight every hour and sends it to your phone, so you only make the trip when the data calls for it.
The two independent bars support the hive front and back, so there is nothing to dismantle between blooms: you fit the scale under the hive and it stays put through transport. It works on a wooden or metal pallet and, if you run Nicotplast floors, the optional centering pins slot in so nothing shifts on the road. Folded up it takes next to no space: it will tuck away even under the lorry seat.
A high-strength aluminium frame that stands up to the elements season after season with no maintenance. The grooved non-slip surface stops the hive sliding during loading manoeuvres, and you can set it up horizontally or vertically. It sits in any position on the pallet, with no levelling or centering adjustments — a decisive detail when you are setting up and breaking down sites against the clock. It takes up to 400 kg, ample headroom for a Dadant with a double super in full flow.
It logs one reading per hour and stores up to 7,000 in its internal memory. When you pass nearby, the BroodMinder Bees app downloads the history over Bluetooth (30–40 m range); and if you run several sites away from home, a BroodMinder-Cell Hub at the apiary uploads the data over the mobile network and shows you the curve in real time from your phone or computer. Weight on its own already points you in the right direction, but combined with a brood sensor and the Hub's weather data the app works out a Nectar Index and lets you compare hives against one another. Even so, monitoring is no substitute for the visit: it tells you which apiary to go to and with what kit, not which one you can skip.
A gain of 1–2 kg a day is a strong nectar flow: time to add supers. A gradual drop over winter is the colony living off its stores, and it tells you when to feed. A sharp drop in the middle of the season is the signature of swarming. And a flat weight that tracks the outside temperature warns of a colony that is lost. The W4's accuracy (±100 g per 10 °C) is calibrated to follow these big movements comfortably — and those are the ones that really matter on an operation on the move.
There is no need to weigh the whole apiary: with three representative hives — a strong one, an average one and a weak one — the figure reflects what is really happening at the site. Put the scale under your best hive alone and the data flatters you into a false optimism, and you end up making decisions on a snapshot that does not represent the rest.

Data sheet
I designed this scale with migratory beekeepers in Europe in mind. I wanted a product that is lightweight (2.5 kg), easy to handle (like carrying a baguette under your arm), and at the same time sturdy (supports up to 400 kg).
The best part about the W4 is that it does not depend on the hive’s leveling, meaning you can install it without worrying about the terrain’s inclination. And if you place it at two in the morning after hours of travel, you can do it literally with your eyes closed.
