Without a data SIM this camera does not start

It does not connect over Wi-Fi: it carries its own modem and needs a data nano SIM, which is not included. Any operator with coverage at the site will do, and a small tariff is enough: it sends alerts and clips, not continuous video.

The condition that stalls most installations is a silly one: the SIM must have the PIN disabled, which you do by putting it in a phone first. A second SIM on your own phone number also works, as long as your operator allows data on it and you can remove the PIN.

02 · COVERAGE

Check it on the exact spot, and check 4G

The unit supports 3G, but that is no longer a real fallback: 3G is being switched off across Europe — Spain and Germany have already finished. What counts today is 4G.

Go to the apiary with your phone forced to 4G and look at the coverage where the camera would actually hang, not on the track in. If there is no 4G there, neither this camera nor any other mobile-network device will work, trackers included.

03 · POWER

Battery plus solar panel, so you don't go back for it

On the battery alone it lasts one to four weeks depending on how many events it records; the solar panel included keeps it topped up and saves you the trip. It warns you below 10 % and can also be charged over micro USB.

04 · WHAT IT SEES

The real range is set by the sensor, not the lens

It records at 2K (2560 × 1440) with 16× digital zoom, and at night it lights up to about 10 metres with infrared. But what triggers the recording is the PIR sensor, and that reaches 10 metres and 110°: beyond that, the lens may see it but nothing starts.

Hence the recommended mounting: 2 to 3 metres high and at an angle, covering the way into the apiary rather than the whole field. It records to a microSD card of up to 128 GB — cloud copies are a separate subscription — and it has a siren and two-way audio.

And one piece of common sense: the camera can be stolen too. That is why it ships with a camouflage skin, and why the clips already on your phone are worth more than the ones on the card.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Almost everything that goes wrong with a 4G camera comes down to two things: the coverage on site and the PIN on the card.
