Details of Corner Bee Escape

A super empties itself if you give it one night and a one-way exit.

Corner bee escape in galvanised steel, 105 × 78 mm and 9 mm tall. It screws or rivets onto the crown board, over a hole of 30 × 30 or 40 × 40 mm.

01 · HOW IT IS USED

Fitted in the evening, collected the next day

Put the crown board with the escapes on the evening before harvest. The workers go down looking for the queen and cannot find their way back: by the next day the super is nearly empty and comes off without shaking frame by frame or spending smoke.

02 · WHEN IT DOES NOT WORK

The three reasons they will not go down

If there is brood in the super, they will not leave it. If it is very hot, they stay up there fanning. And if the hive has any other gap, they come back up through it: the system depends on the escape being the only way through.

And a limit: a day or two, no more. A super full of honey with no bees to defend it is an invitation to robbing.

03 · HOW MANY, AND WHY GALVANISED

One per corner

The usual thing is to fit one at each corner: the more ways through, the sooner the super clears. Galvanised steel is what stands a whole summer without warping or rusting.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is the part, not the crown board:

✓ FITSWooden or phenolic-board crown boards with a 30 × 30 or 40 × 40 mm hole.
✕ DOESN'T FITSupers with brood: bees will not come down from those.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDCrown board, screws or rivets.
