01 · WHY IN A BEEKEEPING SHOP

The grass in front of the entrance

Tall vegetation up against a hive does three things, all of them bad: it gets in the way of flight at the entrance, it holds damp against the timber, and it gives ants and rodents a road to the floor.

And a fourth you do not think about until it happens: with tall grass you cannot see where you are treading. On a hillside site, in summer, that matters. On top of that comes the perimeter clearing many areas require as fire prevention.

02 · WHEN TO CLEAR

With the bees at home

The noise and vibration of a brushcutter irritate the colony, and working in front of the entrances at midday in full foraging is asking for trouble.

What works is doing it first thing or at dusk, with the bees in, starting behind and at the sides and leaving the flight line for last. With light smoke if needed, and without cutting hard against the timber.

03 · WHAT THIS MACHINE MOVES

51.7 cc for real work

At 51.7 cc, 2.38 hp and 7,500 rpm, this is not a garden brushcutter: it is displacement for bramble, scrub and tough grass — which is what grows round an apiary left to itself for half a year.

The 43 cm cut covers open ground quickly, and the 1,500 mm shaft gives the reach to keep out from between the hives. The 7.8 kg call for a harness on a long day.

04 · TWO-STROKE MIX

The ratio is the maker's to set

It is a two-stroke engine: it runs on a mix of petrol and specific oil, not on petrol alone. The exact ratio is given by the maker and is worth respecting — too much oil carbons up, too little seizes.

Mix only what you are going to use: stored, it degrades, and stale mix is the commonest reason a brushcutter will not start in spring.
