01 · BEFORE THE FIRST COAT

Stir it thoroughly: it settles, and that is not a fault

This is the first thing to know and what has caused most disappointment. Opening the tub you will find the solids at the bottom and liquid on top: it must be fully homogenised, and with 5 kg that means a mixing paddle on a drill, not a stick and two turns. Painting without mixing spreads only the liquid phase — hence the complaints that it “hardly covers” or “is too runny”, which is nearly always that and not the paint. Properly stirred, it covers well and one coat is often enough.

02 · DRYING

Count in days, not hours

It is not a fast-drying paint, and it is worth knowing before planning the work: in cold, damp weather or with a thick coat it can still feel tacky after 48 hours, even in the sun. Two things genuinely help: thin coats — a thick one takes far longer and covers no better — and keeping the pieces apart and ventilated rather than stacked. And the practical rule: put nothing back in the apiary and stack no supers until it is dry to the touch, whatever deadline you had in mind.

03 · THE FINISH

Slightly sandy to the touch and matt: that is the mineral load

First-time users feel a fine grain, almost like soft sandpaper, and wonder whether the tub was faulty. It was not: the paint carries a mineral load, and that is what you feel. It gives a matt finish with some grip, and it is also the part that sinks to the bottom and makes stirring necessary. As for colour, you choose it when ordering; bear in mind that light tones reflect the sun and keep the brood box cooler in summer, dark ones absorb heat — useful for mountain wintering — and using different colours along one row helps foragers find their own hive and reduces drifting.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Paint the outside only, with the hive empty: sand it, remove wax, propolis and flaking old paint, and work the parts — supers, floors, roofs — separately, away from the apiary. Never with bees or brood inside.
