Matt water-based paint for the outside of timber hives, in four catalogue colours. It is breathable: it lets the colony's vapour out instead of sealing it in, which is what ends up lifting a sealed coat. Covers 10-16 m² per litre, goes on by brush, roller or spray and washes off with water. The outside touch-up can be done with the hive populated.

COATS ON BARE TIMBER

Matt water-based paint for the outside of timber hives, in four catalogue colours and a 4-litre tub.

It is the annual-maintenance choice for the apiary: it washes off with water, has no smell once dry and does not force you to sand at every repaint.

01 · BREATHABILITY

A populated box gives off vapour all year round

Inside there is a colony ripening nectar and respiring, so the wall is always working from the inside out. A sealed film traps that vapour, it condenses underneath and flakes off within two seasons. This paint lets the timber breathe, which is what keeps the moisture balance in the box and what makes the coat last without blistering.

02 · APPLICATION

Not on a sunlit face, nor on a heavy, humid day

On bare timber it takes two or three coats, and one or two are enough for the annual touch-up. Coverage runs 10 to 16 m² per litre depending on how thirsty the timber is, so the 4-litre tub sees you through a long batch. Apply by brush, roller or low-pressure spray, stirring well before you start.

What is worth respecting: do not paint on a very humid day nor on a face taking the sun head-on. On new timber the manufacturer recommends a base primer before the first coat.

03 · WITH BEES INSIDE

You can go over the outside without clearing the box

It is the question that comes up most, and the practical answer is yes: being water-based and odourless once dry, the outside touch-up is done with the hive populated. Do it with your head on, though — keep off the entrance, leave the afternoon ahead of you so it dries before the cool, and pick a quiet day of flow. And if the part is off the stack anyway, paint it empty: it always comes out better and spares you the compromise.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is matt and for timber. If you want a satin finish that will not yellow, or you also need to paint sheet-metal roofs, the acrylic enamel from the same maker is the one that keys onto metal. The four colours are catalogue shades — grey, green, yellow and blue — so you can mark rows or groups in the apiary and cut drifting between neighbouring hives at the same time.

✓ FITSOutside of boxes, supers, roofs and floors in timber.
✕ DOESN'T FITSheet-metal roofs and the inside of the brood box.
