01 · HOW IT WORKS

The larva eats it and never becomes a moth

Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacterium that does not affect people or bees and imparts no taste or smell to the comb. When the wax moth larva ingests treated wax, the bacterium develops in its gut and kills it. That is why the moment to apply it is before storing, on clean comb: if there are already galleries and cocoons, most of those larvae will not go back to eating treated wax, and it will look to you as though it did not work.

02 · THE MIX

Ten grams per litre, used within 24 hours

Dissolve 10 g in one litre of water and shake until the suspension is even. Spray the combs on both faces, shaking as you go — the spores settle and the last comb ends up with no product. The prepared suspension has to be used within the next 24 hours: after that, throw it away and make up another.

03 · WHERE YES AND WHERE NO

Storage comb only

It is applied only to combs that are going into storage. It is not applied to those inside the hive with bees, brood or honey: it is not a treatment for a populated colony, it is storage protection. If you are unsure about reserve combs that will go back to the colony, read the label on the pack before spraying.

04 · THE STORE

The product helps; the housekeeping decides

A treated comb, well stored, sees out the season; a treated comb stacked in a warm dark corner, less so. Keep the supers aired, cold and in the light if you can, look them over in midwinter, and do not stack old comb with galleries next to what you have just treated. The moth gets in wherever you let it.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Each milligram of suspension carries in the order of 250,000 spores, equivalent to about 700 IU. That is the reference concentration of the preparation.
