01 · WHAT THIS IS

Raw material, not a finished product

Thymol is the compound that gives thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and oregano their smell. What is sold here is thymol as a flavouring or essence, in a 25 kg container meant for whoever uses it in quantity.

It carries no dosage, no protocol and no leaflet, because it is not a finished product: it is a pure chemical in a drum.

02 · THE SUBSTANCE IS NOT THE DRUM

The line between what is legal and what is not

The organic production Regulation (EU) 2018/848 permits thymol among the substances usable against varroa. That is a statement about the substance, and it is true.

To treat a colony, however, you need an authorised veterinary medicine: with its registration number, its dose, its season and its withdrawal period. A drum of flavouring has none of those four things, and none of them can be improvised.

03 · NOT A GREY AREA

Home-made treatments are not an option

Across the EU, treating bees means using a veterinary medicine authorised in your country. In Spain, preparing anti-varroa treatments with thymol on your own account breaches the Animal Health Act 8/2003 and may additionally constitute an offence against public health.

And there is a second reason, less quoted and just as serious: what you apply ends up in the wax and in the honey. There is no coming back from a residue wrongly placed. If what you want is thymol for varroa, authorised medicines exist — in our catalogue, Thymovar.

04 · HANDLING

Twenty-five kilos of a pure chemical

Thymol is a crystalline solid that sublimates and gives off a very penetrating smell. It is handled with protection and with the supplier's safety data sheet in front of you, not from memory.

And that same smell brings its own storage rule: it is not kept near honey, wax or food. It permeates. The container stays closed, somewhere cool and ventilated.
