Details of Glycerin 25 Ltr

99.5 % glycerol in a 25 litre drum — a technical input for laboratory and industrial use, backed by its safety data sheet. Not a product to apply to a colony.

Bulk glycerine is a chemical raw material, and it is worth buying it knowing what its documentation says. This one comes with a safety data sheet under Regulation (EU) 2020/878, and that sheet governs the uses it is identified for, how it is stored and what it must not be mixed with. Everything below comes from it.

🧪 Documented identity and purity

The product is glycerol at 99.5 %, CAS 56-81-5 and EC 200-289-5: a colourless, odourless liquid with a pH of 6 to 7.5 in 10 % solution. According to its sheet it is not classified as hazardous under Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, so it carries no pictograms or hazard statements and falls outside the Seveso III directive.

⚠️ What it is identified for — and what it is not

Its sheet identifies two uses, laboratory and various industrial uses, and it is explicit the other way round: any use not specified there counts as advised against. Two consequences follow. Storage must avoid contact with foodstuffs, per its own storage conditions section. And, the point that matters to a beekeeper, this is not a veterinary medicine and does not serve to make one: against varroa the only option is an authorised product listed on AEMPS/CIMA Vet, with its own datasheet, dose and withdrawal period. This page gives no recipes, proportions or application schedules.

🧯 Incompatibilities, storage and decanting

Glycerol is chemically unstable in contact with acids, bases and oxidising agents — its three declared incompatible materials — and at high temperature it can undergo pyrolysis and dehydrogenation. That is why heating and contact with those materials are the conditions to avoid. Containers are kept between 5 and 35 °C, somewhere dry and ventilated, and once opened they are closed carefully and stood upright. One warning worth reading twice: never use pressure to empty the container, which is not a pressure-rated vessel. To decant, use gravity or a pump.

💡 Three figures that shape the work

It melts at 18 °C: in an unheated honey house the contents thicken in winter and become hard to decant, so warming the room beats forcing anything. It is viscous and dense — relative density 1.261, that is 1.26 kg per litre — so the weight of a full container is worked out from volume, not guessed. And spills leave the floor slippery: the sheet itself recommends CE category II safety footwear (EN ISO 13287, EN 20347).
