SPANISH REGISTRATION

Virkon S is a powdered veterinary-hygiene disinfectant used to make working solutions for empty equipment and surfaces. In beekeeping it provides a measurable process for hive bodies, floors, covers and tools after bees, honey, wax, propolis and dirt have been removed.

This listing is for the 2.5 kg pack —reference 70700145 and EAN 5030157007718— even though the associated photograph shows a bucket labelled 5 kg. It is not a medicine for bees and must not be applied to the colony, brood, combs holding stores or honey.

01 · MEASURE THE MIX

10 g/L makes 1%; 5 g/L makes 0.5%

A 1% solution uses 10 g of powder per litre of water, so the full pack makes 250 L. At 0.5%, use 5 g/L and the pack makes 500 L. Measure the water, weigh the dose, add the powder to the water and stir until dissolved. Do not automatically choose the weaker mix: concentration must match the current label, target organism and national requirements. For a mechanical sprayer or pressure washer, Zotal specifies 300 ml of solution per m²; timber absorption and application losses mean actual coverage will vary.

02 · CORRECT SEQUENCE

Clean and dry first; disinfect afterwards

Mechanically remove wax, propolis, biological residues and dirt, wash the surface, rinse where required and allow it to dry. Only then apply the solution evenly and keep the surface wet for the contact time stated on the label for the intended use. A stronger solution cannot make up for poor cleaning. Do not mix Virkon S with other chemicals, especially strong bases, and do not store leftover working solution unless the current label allows it. Before returning equipment to the apiary, follow the supplied pack instructions for rinsing, ventilation and complete drying.

03 · AMERICAN FOULBROOD, NO FALSE CERTAINTY

The beekeeping study shows reduction, not sterilisation

A peer-reviewed study tested 1% Virkon S for 30 minutes on clean wood and polystyrene, without wax or propolis, against Paenibacillus larvae spores. Under those conditions, mean biocidal effect was about 88.3% on wood and 96.8% on polystyrene: useful load reduction, but not 100%. P. larvae causes American foulbrood, not European foulbrood. Where disease is suspected or confirmed, this product does not replace diagnosis, notification or the sanitation plan required by the veterinary authority; used porous equipment can perform less favourably than clean laboratory coupons.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

Protect eyes and skin; prevent dust, mixing and release

According to the available SDS, the concentrate causes serious eye damage, irritates skin and is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Wear gloves and eye/face protection, avoid breathing dust and work with suitable ventilation. Keep the container tightly closed and dry, away from heat, sunlight and food; the available SDS states 5–30 °C, but always check the current label and SDS. Do not use it in ponds or aquariums and do not discharge it to drains or watercourses. Registration 0065-P is Spanish; users elsewhere must verify local authorisation and directions before use.
