It is for anything with an element and water in it. What it is not for is calibrating a honey refractometer: zero is not on that scale.

01 · LIMESCALE INSULATES THE ELEMENT

Why distilled and not tap water

Mains water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Heated, they precipitate as scale on the element, and that crust insulates: the element has to run hotter inside to give the same heat outside, and it burns out sooner.

That is why distilled water goes into anything that heats water: steam generators, uncapping machines, dehumidifiers and double-wall jackets like the one on a heated creamer — which, incidentally, takes more than 25 litres to fill.

02 · IT WON'T CALIBRATE A REFRACTOMETER

The mistake worth avoiding

A honey refractometer is not zeroed with distilled water. Its scale starts far higher — it works in the region of 58 to 90 % solids — and water reads zero, which simply is not on that scale.

The zero on a honey refractometer is set with the calibration oil the maker specifies, and that is the only valid reference. Distilled water stays with the machinery.
