01 · POWER

The battery already in your workshop

18 V, 240 W and 13 A, running on commercial 18 or 20 V batteries. Adapters exist for twelve brands: Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, Metabo, Milwaukee, Einhell, Parkside, AEG, Hitachi, Ferrex, Black+Decker, Lux. With 4-5 Ah and the unit already hot, the manufacturer quotes enough for 40-50 hives; for large apiaries 8-9 Ah is the sensible choice. It carries a voltage indicator and deep-discharge protection: it shuts off at 15.4 V and will not start below 17.2 V, which is what stops you ruining a battery at the end of the day.

02 · BUILD

Stainless steel and a tube with no elbows

The whole body is stainless steel with a 6 mm brass outlet. The tube has no elbows — precisely where residue collects and cleaning gets awkward. Internal insulation holds performance in cold and wind, and the unit supports its own weight in the entrance hole without being propped up. It weighs 1 kg. A 7 mm hole in the hive wall makes insertion straightforward.

03 · DOSING AND TIMING

The device meters; the medicine sets the regime

The single-dose dispenser adjusts between 1 and 4 grams and temperature control is dynamic so it does not overheat. The amount and the regime are set by the summary of product characteristics of the medicine you use, not by the device. On timing: oxalic acid works by contact on the mites riding the bees, so the equipment earns its keep in a broodless period — under sealed brood the mite sits out of reach inside the cell.

04 · MAINTENANCE

With Api-Bioxal it needs cleaning after every use

Api-Bioxal contains excipients —colloidal silica hydrate and glucose monohydrate— that caramelise inside the vaporiser and can block the gas outlet. With that medicine, clean it after every use, sometimes unscrewing the casing to clear the residue. The manual and the maintenance guide are attached to this page as PDFs.

⚠ PRECAUTIONS

Sublimation vapour is irritant and corrosive to the airways and the eyes. Work with proper respiratory protection, goggles and gloves, stand with your back to the wind and do not lean over the entrance while the unit is running. The equipment reaches high temperatures: let it cool before storing or refilling it.
