Water going in, oil holding it there

A lotion is an emulsion: a water phase and an oil phase. The water gives immediate hydration but evaporates; what holds it are the oils and butters, which slow the loss through the skin.

So the moment matters more than the amount: applied on still-damp skin, right after the shower, it traps the water already there. On skin that has dried completely, it does considerably less.

02 · WHAT IS IN IT

Shea, propolis and sunflower

The formula combines shea butter — the part doing the holding — with propolis wax, sunflower oil, lavender floral water, rosemary essential oil and vitamin E. The maker produces it in Occitanie, France.

The maker declares 98 % of ingredients of natural origin and 20 % from organic farming. It is dermatologically tested and contains essential oil, worth noting on skin reactive to fragrance.

03 · FOR WHICH SKIN

Fluid, and that has its limits

The fluid texture absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy feel, which is what you want for daily, whole-body use. The scent is light, with cotton-flower notes.

The trade-off: the more fluid an emulsion, the less occlusive it is. On very dry skin or in midwinter, a butter or a balm lasts more hours than a lotion.

It is everyday body cosmetics: it moisturises and softens. It is not a treatment for skin conditions.
