Some jars are bought for what fits inside. Others are bought because a child points at them on the counter.

Twenty bear-shaped glass jars of 285 ml, with a Twist Off 58 mouth. They stand 116.5 mm tall by 80 across and hold about 400 g of honey.

01 · THE LID

Standard TO 58, and here the numbers do not match

The mouth is an ordinary Twist Off 58, so it takes the shallow-skirt TO 58 lid, in gold or black. The deep-skirt one — the silver DTO-58 — belongs to the wide-mouth jars and is not for this.

And a practical warning: the jars come in twenties and those lids in twenty-fives. It is not one pack per pack as in other formats; one pack of lids covers one pack of jars and leaves you five over.

02 · WHY IT IS BOUGHT

The format that sells itself

Two hundred and eighty-five millilitres are about 400 g of honey: the size of a keepsake that gets used up. The bear works where an ordinary jar goes unnoticed — a shop counter, a gift hamper, a wedding or communion favour, a restaurant table.

And it is good for more than honey: jam, spread or sweets go in just as well through a 58 mouth.
