It closes by heat sealing in the machine and also takes friction, steel seals or plastic buckles when strapping by hand. It weighs 8.4 kg and contains at least 30 % recycled plastic.

A badly strapped pallet falls apart on the first bend; what holds is not the strap’s strength, it is that it does not slip while sealing.

01 · THE EMBOSSING

The relief that makes the roller grip

The face of the strap is embossed, with a marked relief that lets the tension roller grip instead of slipping. It withstands 1,400 N of breaking strength with 15 % elongation: it stretches just enough to absorb a knock in transport without snapping, and secures light loads of up to 300 kg. Being flexible it follows the contour of the package without marking it, which is the difference from steel strapping on cardboard boxes or pallets of jars.

02 · THE REEL

A 200 core and two thousand metres

The inner diameter is 200 mm, the size of the standard reel holder on benchtop semi-automatic machines, and the outer is 389. Each reel carries 2,000 metres and weighs 8.4 kg: enough for several thousand closures. The working range runs from -10 to 100 °C, so it takes the cold of a chill room and the heat of a warehouse in August, but it loses tension if the package goes through a hot process.

03 · HOW IT CLOSES

Heat sealing in the machine, or by hand

In a strapping machine it closes by heat sealing: the strap fuses to itself and no extra consumable is needed. By hand it takes friction closing, a metal seal or a plastic buckle. Polypropylene is the light-load strap: for heavy pallets or loads that cannot shift, the next step up is polyester or steel.
