Details of HIIVE Natural Hive
A tree cavity built on purpose: 37.5 litres of wooden tube, insulated with hemp wool, mounted on a pole and with not a single frame inside.
It is not a production hive, and that is worth saying first. The HIIVE is meant for keeping bees close, watching them and letting them build as they please. You do harvest, but little: the honey comes from an upper dome, not from stackable supers. Anyone after kilos needs another hive; anyone after a colony in the garden will see more here than they ever would in a Langstroth.
01 · NO FRAMES: NATURAL COMB
The bees build freely inside a wooden tube
There are no frames or top bars inside: the colony builds its combs downward from the top, at the spacing and thickness it wants, just as in a hollow tree. That is what makes it interesting and also what changes the whole management.
A freely built comb cannot be lifted out to look at it. Inspection is done through the windows and by what you hear and weigh, not frame by frame. Count on that before deciding: it is the biggest practical difference from any framed hive.
02 · THE HEMP WOOL
It does not heat: it cuts what the colony spends
The maker gives insulation 3.4 times better than a conventional hive. It is worth understanding what that means: insulation does not produce heat, it makes the heat the bees generate escape more slowly in winter and the heat outside come in more slowly in summer.
Hemp wool is also hygroscopic, so it buffers swings in humidity instead of condensing them on the wall, which is where the trouble in a cold sealed box comes from. The outer shell is weatherproof.
03 · THE HARVEST IS SYMBOLIC
A dome with an excluder, not a super
The honey is gathered in the upper dome, separated from the nest by a queen excluder. The German dealer puts that dome at about five or six litres, which is a few kilos: enough for the house and to show people, not for a season.
Put another way: here the honey is the consequence, not the aim. If the aim is honey, the catalogue's answer is a Langstroth or a Layens with their supers, not this.
04 · WHAT COMES SEPARATELY
The pole, the storm kit and the sensor
The HIIVE is installed on a pole, and that pole is ordered separately, as is the securing kit for strong wind. It is the first thing to budget for, because without it the hive does not stand.
The sensor is not inside either. The device that measures temperature, humidity and sound frequency inside the hive is a monitoring kit bought separately; the hive comes with the housing ready for it.
05 · BEFORE YOU BUY
Three things that decide whether this hive is for you, and one to ask about.
