Autumn: you pop the plug out of the top feeder so the bees can reach the winter candy from below. Works fine. Winter passes, February rolls in, you want to stimulate with 1:1 syrup — and the plug is lost in some corner of the storage room or fell off during a hive check. You fill the feeder and the syrup runs straight through the centre hole into the brood nest. Five minutes later you have a sticky hive, drowned bees and robbing kicking off.

This plastic plug is the piece that closes that central hole of the ANEL® top feeder when you want to use it with liquid syrup. It comes out when you switch to fondant, candy or any solid feed — that way the bees climb up through the hole and work the patty from below. Plug in, the feeder is sealed for liquid; plug out, it's set for solid. Same lid, two feeding modes.

Press-fit, with a pull tab. Goes in and out by hand with no tools, gloves on included. Small detail that matters when you're working a long round of hives and don't fancy hunting for the hive tool on every single one.

Sold individually for replacing the ones that go missing every season — and there are always more than you'd think — or for keeping a couple of spares in the apiary store before feeding season.
