01 · CLOTHES UNDERNEATH AREN'T FOR WARMTH

The principle to understand

Fabric stops a sting when there is air between cloth and skin. Wherever the suit pulls tight — knees when crouching, shoulders, waist — that gap disappears and the sting gets through.

That is why you wear a layer underneath, and why a size that is not snug is the right one. It is the same principle that holds a veil off the face with spacer bars: what protects is not the material, it is the space.

02 · THE JACKET GOES OVER

Where the two pieces meet

A two-piece goes on and comes off far quicker than a full coverall, which counts with a child. In exchange it has a join at the waist, and that is where attention goes: the jacket sits over the trousers, overlapping, never tucked inside.

Before opening a hive you check the same three points every time: waist overlapped, cuffs snug and ankles closed over the boot.

03 · WHY THE COLOUR IS PALE

It is not styling

Buttermilk is not a catalogue decision. Bees respond worse to dark, furry silhouettes — that is what a predator looks like to them; faced with pale, smooth colour they are noticeably calmer.

The cloth is supreme twill polycotton: the cotton breathes and the polyester takes the wear and the washes. On a child who tires of the heat, breathing matters as much as protecting.

04 · WASH IT, AND NOT FOR LOOKS

The reason almost nobody gives

When a bee stings, she leaves the alarm pheromone on the cloth that calls the rest of the colony. That signal stays in the fabric: a suit carrying stings from previous days draws more attacks than a clean one.

Wash it by hand or on a gentle cycle, without fabric softener — it leaves residue — and air dry it. And an honest note: no suit removes the possibility of a sting altogether. With a child, alongside the suit you pick a calm hive and a good day.
