TIMBER

Pine bottom board with a screened window at the rear, for fixed-floor 10-frame bodies: Dadant Blatt, Dadant US and Langstroth.

Between the solid floor, which renews nothing, and the full open mesh floor, which ventilates all year whether you want it or not, sits this one: a single screened window at the back. It is for the beekeeper who wants air without turning the base into a draught.

01 · VENTILATION

A window at the back renews the air without opening the whole base

The rear screen lets out the warm, damp air the colony generates, above all on hot days and while the honey is ripening, when a closed chamber saturates. But being a window and not the whole floor, the hive keeps its underside closed off from outside: on cold or windy sites, a full mesh floor makes the bees spend more to hold the brood nest temperature through winter. This is the middle ground.

02 · FITTING

It fixes to the body, and the part that projects at the front is the landing board

This is a fixed floor: it fits to the body and stays with it, rather than sliding in and out as a tray. It measures 525 mm long against the 500-515 mm of a 10-frame body, and that difference at the front is the landing board the bees come down on. The width, 430 mm, is the width of the body.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

If what you want is to count varroa, this is not the floor

A partially screened floor carries no removable tray underneath, so it cannot be used to collect and count natural varroa drop. That needs a screened bottom board with a tray. This one solves ventilation, not diagnosis.

✓ FITS10-frame bodies: Dadant Blatt, Dadant US and Langstroth.
✕ DOESN'T FITNucs, 6-frame bodies and Layens.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDRemovable tray for varroa counts.
