The spur is used to stick the beeswax foundation sheets to the frame wire. This spur is electric, is connected and once hot is passed over by rolling the tool over the wire pushing it into the wax foundation. When the wax takes the right temperature it softens and it is time for the wire to be embedded in the sheet.

Detalles de Electric spur embedder

The electric spur embedder is a simple yet effective tool used to embed wax foundation sheets into the wires of beehive frames by applying localized heat. It’s commonly used by beekeepers who assemble their own frames, especially in small-scale or hobbyist settings.

In beekeeping, it’s essential that the wax sheet is firmly attached to the frame wires. This prevents the wax from slipping, sagging, or collapsing during hot temperatures in the hive or during transport and honey extraction. Poor embedding can lead to fallen or broken foundation sheets, disrupting brood rearing and comb stability.

How it works

The embedder consists of three main components: a plastic handle, an internal heating resistor, and a copper alloy spur wheel that delivers heat to the wire.

• Plug it into a standard 230V single-phase outlet (~30W).
• Place the wax foundation onto the frame, resting on the tensioned wires.
• Roll the heated spur wheel slowly over the wires, applying gentle pressure.
• The wire heats up and melts into the wax. Once cooled, it remains firmly embedded.

While this tool is slower than a transformer embedder with electric probes, it’s more affordable, easy to use, and doesn’t require prior experience. It’s a great option for occasional frame preparation or hobbyist beekeepers.

Electric vs. manual spur embedder

A manual version is also available, which needs to be preheated with a flame (e.g., a torch). The electric version, while slower than a transformer, maintains a stable operating temperature, offering more consistent results without repeated reheating.

Usage tips

Don’t press too hard: let the heat melt the wax, not damage the wood or wire.
• In warm climates or with soft wax, work in a cool room or use stiffer foundation.
• Suitable for Layens, Langstroth, and Dadant frames, as long as they are properly wired.
