Silicone mould for a small angel 5.5 cm tall by 3 across: around 16 grams of wax a piece.

Some sixty candles to a kilo of wax. A small figure turns the same kilo into many more units: this is the mould for the gift basket, the wedding favour and the market stall.

01 · THE WAX ARITHMETIC

The cylinder that wraps the figure sets the ceiling

The candle is 5.5 cm tall by 3 across. The cylinder that wraps it holds 39 cm³, which at the density of beeswax (0.96 g/cm³) is 37 grams as an absolute maximum, and a shaped figure never fills its cylinder.

LYSON's catalogue gives about 16 grams: about 60 candles to the kilo. Weigh your first piece and adjust the number to your own wax.

02 · THE WICK AND THE POUR

3×6 to start and wax at 70-75 °C

For 3 cm across the maker recommends a 3×6 wick, worth taking as a starting point: beeswax asks for more wick than paraffin at the same diameter, and if it falls short the flame digs a well and drowns.

Pour with the mould clean and dry and the wax at around 70-75 °C, because above 85 °C it darkens. Cool naturally without moving the mould. The mould has a slit: before pouring, close it with rubber bands so the wax does not escape through the join.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY
