01 · WHAT THE COLOUR CHANGES

The outside, and only the outside

Black is outer lacquer over the same tinplate: inside it carries the same food-grade lacquer and the same sealing compound as the gold one, and they share a specification sheet and a thermal limit. You can alternate colours within a single filling run without changing anything in the process. Where it does decide is on the shelf: over pale honey — orange blossom, rosemary, spring multiflora — black outlines the jar and frames the label, whereas gold tends to blend into the colour of the honey.

02 · COMPATIBILITY

Two containers, and a sibling that is not this finish

It closes the 500 ml Frescor bottle. Watch the Diamond, which comes in two sizes that do not share a finish: the 500 g is TO 48, but the 300 g is TO 43. Five millimetres you cannot judge by eye, in the same family styling; if you keep both in the store, sort the lids by size rather than by brand.

03 · LIGHT METAL IS HANDLED DIFFERENTLY

0.14 mm: it closes with nothing and dents with nothing

It is the lightest gauge in the twist-off range, and on a 48 mm disc it is more than enough — the stiffness of a lid depends mostly on diameter. In the hand it shows in two ways: it closes with very little torque, no forcing needed, and one knock on the skirt is enough to stop it seating. Keep them in their bag until you fill, and discard a lid with a marked edge rather than trying to tighten it further.

FROM THE APIARY

A Twist-Off does not screw on like a bottle cap: the four lugs ride up a short ramp and the whole closure is a quarter turn. Sit it flat until you feel it settle, turn to the stop and leave it there: carrying on does not seal better, it bends the lug and leaves the jar impossible to open. If it grates or feels like the thread has stripped, lift it off and set it down again — there is no thread to strip, a lug has ridden over its ramp.

04 · BEFORE YOU BUY

This is a small-jar lid: for a retail honey jar the usual finishes are TO 63 and TO 77. The same reference also comes as a full box of 2,300 lids, and in gold if you prefer the classic look.
