01 · THE LID

Deep-skirt TO 48

The number on a Twist-Off mouth is its diameter in millimetres: TO 48 means 48 mm. And on a bottle the matching lid is a deep skirt, taller than the one for a standard jar of the same size.

Checking before you order saves a trip: a low-skirt lid rests on the neck and never seats on the rim.

02 · IF IT IS FOR MEAD

Only once fermentation is over

It is the classic half-bottle format for mead, but there is a limit worth being clear about: a twist-off lid is not a pressure closure. It is four lugs on a ramp, meant to seal, not to hold gas.

So bottle with fermentation finished. If sugar and live yeast remain, the CO₂ produced has nowhere to go. For sparkling mead, use crown caps or a champagne cork.

03 · IF IT IS FOR HONEY

Half a litre is about seven hundred grams

Honey weighs close to 1.4 kg per litre, so these 500 ml to the brim come to about 700 g of honey. The bottle does not lie about volume; what changes is the weight you declare on the label.

And a warning about the format: only fluid honey comes out of a 48 mm neck. The moment it crystallises, a bottle becomes a problem. For honeys that granulate early, use a wide-mouth jar.

04 · THE PACK

25 bottles, and 1,320 per pallet

It is supplied in packs of 25, the sensible quantity for a short run of mead, honey vinegar or liqueurs.

If you are scaling up, a full pallet is 1,320 bottles. Each one weighs 225 g of glass and measures 192.2 mm tall by Ø 70.4 mm.
