01 · WHAT IT IS SOLD FOR

Descaling: limescale and baked-on wax and grime

It is a technical cleaning product, and in a honey house it has two clear jobs. The first is removing limescale from steam generators — those on wax melters and similar equipment, where scale builds up on the element and in the circuit and eventually drags performance down. The second is attacking stubborn deposits of wax, propolis and grime on tools and acid-resistant surfaces, the sort that will not shift with detergent or hot water. Beyond that it has no place in hive management: it is not applied to hives, to bees, or to anything alive.

02 · HOW IT IS HANDLED

Protective equipment is not optional here

Before opening the container: chemical-resistant gloves — and checked for this substance in the glove's own table, because a general certification is not enough — safety goggles or a face shield and, if you are working with volume or indoors, a mask with an acid-vapour filter. Always work in a well-ventilated space, preferably outdoors. If you have to dilute it for a cleaning job, always pour the acid into the water, never the other way round, and slowly. Do not mix it with bleach or other cleaning products. Keep the original container closed and upright, away from heat and out of reach of children and animals.

WHAT YOU CANNOT DO WITH THIS PRODUCT

In Spain, using formic acid for the home preparation of treatments against Varroa or other unauthorised veterinary applications is prohibited, may constitute an offence under the Criminal Code and, in addition, an administrative infringement under animal health and veterinary medicines legislation. For varroa there are authorised veterinary medicines, with their dose, their format and their registration. And a clarification to a question we have been asked: there is no dilution that makes it safe on skin — lowering the concentration reduces the aggressiveness, it does not remove it, and the rule remains not to touch it.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

A 1 litre container with safety cap, at 85 % concentration. It is a corrosive product: on contact with skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical advice taking the product label with you. If inhaled, move into fresh air. Always consult the safety data sheet before handling it — that document governs, not this description.
