Details of Formic Acid Gel 60%

60 % formic acid in gel form, with a dosing cap, in 500 g and 1 kg containers. A technical product for cleaning and hygiene of beekeeping equipment.

This is not a veterinary medicine, and the distinction is not a detail. It decides what may be done with the product and what may not, and it is worth being clear about before adding it to the basket.

01 · WHAT IT IS

60 % formic acid, gelled, slow to evaporate

The gel releases the acid gradually instead of flashing off the way a liquid solution does. That is what makes a product manageable that is hard to dose in liquid form.

It comes in 500 g or 1 kg, with a dosing cap, and its place in the catalogue is cleaning and hygiene of beekeeping equipment.

02 · THE LINE NOT TO CROSS

Varroa calls for an authorised medicine

Formic acid is admitted against Varroa destructor in organic production under Regulation (EU) 2018/848. But the regulation admits the substance, not the bottle: it has to be applied through an authorised veterinary medicine, with its registration number and its data sheet.

A bulk product or a home preparation is not that. Treating food-producing animals with an unauthorised preparation is an offence throughout the EU, and beekeeping is not an exception.

The legal route exists: there are formic acid veterinary medicines with a marketing authorisation, and those are what an organic certifier will accept. This gel is not one of them.

03 · CORROSIVE, NOT IRRITANT

At 60 % it burns skin and eyes

It is worth using the right word. Formic acid at 60 % causes severe skin burns and eye damage: «avoid contact» does not cover it.

Handle it with chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and in a ventilated place, never over ordinary work clothes and never with your face over the container as you open it. And never mix it with anything else.

04 · STORAGE

In its own container, cool and dark

Keep it in the original container — the one that carries the hazard labelling — in a cool, dry place, out of sunlight and out of reach of children.

Never decant it into drinks bottles or unlabelled containers. That is the mistake that turns a chemical into a household accident.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is a technical chemical: you buy it knowing what it is and what you handle it with.

✓ FITSCleaning and hygiene of beekeeping equipment, with protective gear and ventilation.
✕ DOESN'T FITAs a varroa treatment: that calls for authorised veterinary medicines.
