01 · WHAT THE FIRST FLIGHT IS

Three weeks of work indoors before going out

A newly emerged worker does not go foraging. She spends her first weeks inside, cleaning cells, feeding brood, producing wax and standing guard at the entrance. Only at the end of that path does she become a forager.

And before heading to the field she makes orientation flights: she comes out in the afternoon, stays facing the entrance and traces ever wider circles to memorise where home is. Anyone with hives has seen it: that cloud of young bees hovering in front of the apiary in mid-afternoon is the first-flight crowd.

02 · SIZE, CLASP AND PRESENTATION

It goes on the cloth, not on the skin

It measures 2.5 × 3.4 cm and weighs 11 grams: barely noticeable on a lapel and light enough not to drag a fine scarf. It is made of enamelled metal alloy with bright rhinestone-style detail, and the clasp is a classic pin, the kind that holds best on a coat or a cloth bag.
