Details of Schley Pressure Grip Forceps

Original Schley 1.05 grasper for holding the queen's sting during instrumental insemination.

It is a spare part of the Schley system, not a complete instrument. It mounts on the device and works alongside the 1.23 ventral hook: between them they open the sting chamber so the cannula can reach the median oviduct.

01 · WHAT IT HOLDS AND WHEN

The sting, while the ventral hook pulls from the other side

With the queen held in her tube and anaesthetised, the sting chamber has to be opened in two directions: the ventral hook moves the lower side and this grasper takes the sting and lifts it. According to Schley, that lift reproduces the posture of natural mating, which is when the chamber really becomes accessible. Only then does the opening appear through which the cannula goes in.

02 · A GRIP INSTEAD OF A HOOK

It grasps the sting instead of hooking it from below

The classic set-up uses a pierced hook that is passed under the sting; this grasper holds it between two jaws. The pressure is constant and even, and you meter it with the movement of your hand, which gives more direct control when the sting slips away. It is about 130 mm long and 5 mm in diameter.
