American and European foulbrood need different tests

The AFB kit tests for the agent causing American foulbrood, while the EFB kit tests for European foulbrood. They are not interchangeable general health tests. Select the test appropriate to the suspected disease and collect the sample as instructed.

The control line shows whether the device has worked. A negative result concerns the sample tested and does not by itself exclude infection throughout the colony. If suspicious signs persist, retain the sample identification, date and result for veterinary assessment and any necessary confirmation.

American foulbrood is notifiable in Spain and subject to surveillance in the EU. If you suspect it or obtain a positive result, contact the official veterinary services of your Spanish autonomous community without delay; elsewhere, contact the competent veterinary authority. A field test does not replace official confirmation or determine the required measures on its own.

Apiguard: thymol gel and clearance above the tray

Apiguard contains thymol gel. The Spanish product information requires a forecast daily maximum of 15–40 °C during treatment and at least 0.5 cm between the top of the tray and the hive lid. Do not use it when colony activity is very low.

Position it as directed in the leaflet, following the treatment schedule and harvesting restrictions. The gap above the tray gives bees access to the gel; a tray placed without that clearance does not meet the stated conditions.

Swarm lures and stored combs

Swarm attractant wipes are placed in an empty box to attract scout bees. Open them when preparing the trap; success also depends on location and the presence of swarms. B-401 is used for preventive protection of stored combs against wax moth. Follow the label for the specific presentation and dilution: it is not a medicine for treating bee diseases.
