Light brown shellac-based glue from Bienen Ruck (ref. 20201) for sticking the marking disc to the queen’s thorax: a small glass bottle with a screw cap. It is the glue that the ApiDana Magnet Pro plates (3320) and the Magneto applicator (3319) do not include; the opalitki kit (2759) has its own.
The magnet carries the plate to the thorax; what keeps it there for three years is this drop of shellac.
01 · HOW IT IS USED
One drop, the plate on top, and wait
With the queen held in the plunger cage (205), put a minimal amount in the centre of the thorax with the tip of a toothpick, rest the plate on it and hold for a few seconds. No touching the abdomen, legs or wings, and the queen does not go back on the comb until the glue has set: releasing her earlier means finding the plate on the hive floor three days later. If it is your first time, practise on drones. Close the bottle as soon as you have used it, because the solvent evaporates.
02 · WHAT IT GOES WITH
Opalith and Magnet Pro plates
It sticks numbered opalith discs and ApiDana Magnet Pro metal plates, which the magnetic applicator positions but does not fix. The plate colour is set by the last digit of the year, the international code; the number identifies each queen. It is shellac dissolved in alcohol: flammable, so keep it away from the lit smoker, and it can irritate the skin. The supplier does not state the bottle volume.
