Details of ApiDana Magnet Pro numbered magnetic queen marking discs

ApiDana Magnet Pro magnetic metal plates for marking queens: 3 mm discs numbered 1 to 100, mounted on a plastic card of about 55 × 85 mm. They are ordered by colour, on a card of 100 plates, or as a set of the five colours, 500 plates with an applicator included. The glue (3318) is in neither format.

The colour says what year the queen is from; the number says which one she is.

01 · THE COLOUR AND THE NUMBER

You do not choose the year, the code does

The international code assigns the colour by the last digit of the year and repeats every five: white for years ending in 1 and 6, yellow for 2 and 7, red for 3 and 8, green for 4 and 9 and blue for 5 and 0. With that, one glance tells you whether a queen is two or seven years old even if the hive record is lost. The number is what the colour cannot give: each plate is numbered 1 to 100, so the queen is linked to your record of mother, nucleus and behaviour. Without a number you know the age; with a number you can repeat the one that performs best.

02 · HOW THEY GO ON

Metal: the magnet carries them, the glue fixes them

Being metal, the magnetic applicator (3319) picks them off the card and holds them at the tip all the way to the thorax, which with a 3 mm disc is half the job. The other half is the glue (3318): the magnet only positions, and the plate falls off three days later if the queen is released before the shellac sets. With the queen held in the plunger cage (205), the plate goes centred on the thorax, without touching abdomen, legs or wings.

03 · BEFORE YOU BUY

The card of the chosen colour is supplied, or the set of five colours with an applicator; the glue comes separately.

✓ FITSAnyone breeding queens and keeping records: the number links each queen to her origin and her behaviour.
✕ DOESN’T FITAnyone who only wants to see the age at a glance: the marker pen (1613) is enough and needs no glue.
⚠ NOT INCLUDEDGlue; and the applicator except in the five-colour set.
