01 · WHAT IT DOES

One or two sprays, and the bees go down

Apply it from 50 to 60 cm above the open brood chamber, one or two sprays. After a short stir the bees move down between the combs and leave the surface clear to work on.

Its ground is the short job: finding a queen, introducing a cage, checking two frames. It suits the case where lighting the smoker takes longer than the visit itself — and the case where dry country advises against lighting anything at all.

02 · WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

And here it pays to be clear

It is not a personal defence product. If a colony genuinely attacks — you, or someone who happened to be passing — no spray stops it: you walk away from the spot, protect your head and neck, and get into a car or an enclosed building. Trusting an aerosol in that situation costs you the seconds that matter.

Nor does it replace the smoker on a long inspection or with a colony on guard, and it is not protective equipment: the suit, the gloves and the veil still do their job. It is a tool for short interventions; bought expecting anything else, it disappoints.

03 · HOW TO USE IT WELL

Distance, small amounts, and where not to

Shake before use and keep your distance: spraying close up or soaking the bees does not make it work better, it just wets them. A fine layer and a few seconds' wait is all it takes.

The maker does not publish the full composition, so the sensible caution is the same as with anything that goes into a hive: do not apply it on honey supers meant for consumption. Over the brood chamber, to move bees aside, which is what it is for.

04 · THE CAN

No spark in use, but flammable in the can

Both things are true and belong together: in use it produces no heat and no spark, which is its advantage in woodland; but the container is an extremely flammable aerosol.

Hence the usual rules: never leave it in the sun or in a car in summer — above 50 °C —, keep it away from flames and sparks, and do not pierce or burn it, even when empty.
