01 · WHAT IS IN IT, AND FOR HOW MANY

500 g of base for six bars

500 g of base across six hexagons gives bars of about 83 g, a generous hand-soap size. The base carries shea butter, so the bar sets firm.

The rest of the kit is what makes it an activity: a wooden stirrer, parchment paper and twine for wrapping, and the instructions. It arrives ready to give as a present or to fill an afternoon with children.

02 · THE WAX GOES SEPARATELY

It melts higher than the base

The 10 g of beeswax — 2 % of the base — cannot go into the melted base in pieces: beeswax melts at 62-65 °C and the base must not pass 60. It would seize into lumps.

Melt the wax in a separate container, warm the base, and combine when both are liquid. The wax brings its own scent and a silkier feel in use.

03 · THE FLOWERS WILL DARKEN

That is normal, not a fault in the kit

Dried calendula and lavender look beautiful on day one and brown over the following weeks. Soap is alkaline and flower pigments do not survive it.

And anything sitting proud of the surface can go mouldy if the bar lives in a damp bathroom. For looks that last, set the flower inside the bar and keep the show face clean.

04 · THE MOULD, ONCE USED

Workshop, not kitchen

The honeycomb mould is reusable and also takes beeswax candles, its natural second job in a beekeeping household. But once soap or wax has been through it, it does not go back to baking: silicone holds on to what is poured into it.

And even if it survives the dishwasher, wash it by hand in hot water: long cycles and harsh detergent shorten the life of silicone.

05 · BEFORE YOU BUY

It is a complete kit for one batch: six bars. Carrying on afterwards means restocking base.
