01 · WHAT THYMOL IS

A phenol from thyme, in crystals, with a lot of smell

Thymol is the main phenolic component of thyme essential oil. At room temperature it comes as white crystals that sublime slowly: they need no heating to smell, they evaporate on their own and the aroma permeates everything around them. That same volatility is what makes it useful as an essence and what obliges you to keep it tightly closed and away from food, because it passes its smell to whatever shares a cupboard with it.

02 · NOT THYMOL IN A TUB

What gets registered is not the substance, it is the control of its release

This is worth explaining, because it is the technical root of the warning below. A registered thymol-based product is not loose thymol: it is a matrix — a wafer, a gel — designed to release the substance at a set rate, and that rate depends on hive temperature. In the cold an uncontrolled preparation barely evaporates and does nothing; in the heat it runs away, and the excess harms brood, disturbs the queen and can trigger absconding. On top of that, thymol is fat-soluble and builds up in the wax — and that wax stays in the hive season after season.

LEGAL WARNING

In Spain, using thymol to prepare homemade varroa treatments is considered unlawful, covered by the Criminal Code and possibly constituting an administrative offence as well. This tub is sold as an aroma and natural essence, and that is how it is invoiced and labelled. If what you need is to treat your hives, this is not the product: a registered medicine gives you the dose, the method, the withdrawal period and the traceability your treatment record requires. Always consult your animal-health group or vet before applying anything to a hive.
